Singapore Employment

When you are planning to work in Singapore, whether it will be a so-called 'local' company or a foreign branch, one has to have a valid employment pass. There is quite a number of visas one could apply for. It is the company you are going to work for which has to apply your employment pass. Your type of visa depends on the type of contract you sign. Applications for employment passes are dealt with by the Ministry of Manpower.

  • Employed by a company: Normal employment pass, short term pass and training pass. A work permit is needed for persons going to work in Singapore with a salary lower than S$2,500 and a Employment pass is needed for persons with a salary exceeding S$2,500.
  • Self employed: The correct pass for being self employed in Singapore is the Employment Pass for Entrepreneurs. This pass has to be applied at the Ministry of Manpower as well.

Employment pass:

The employment is again divided in different sub-passes, which are the so-called P Pass, Q1 Pass and the S-Pass.

P Pass

For foreigners who hold acceptable degrees, professional qualifications or specialist skills and are seeking professional, administrative, executive or managerial jobs.

  • A P1 Pass will be issued if the applicant's monthly basic salary is more than S$7,000.
  • A P2 Pass will be issued if the applicant's monthly basic salary is more than S$3,500 and up to S$7,000.

Q1 Pass

For foreigners whose monthly basic salary is more than S$2,500 and possess acceptable degrees, professional qualifications or specialist skills.

S Pass

For foreigners whose monthly basic salary is at least S$1,800. S Pass applicants will be assessed on a points system, taking into account multiple criteria including salary, education qualifications, skills, job type and work experience. A levy of S$50 per month will apply and there will be a 5% cap on the number of S Pass holders in each company based on the company's number of local workers and Work Permit holders.

Other relevant passes:

  • When living in Singapore and your family is joining you, they will have to apply for dependants passes. These passes usually fall under the Immigration and Checkpoint Authority.
  • Special passes have to be applied as well for students (e.g. on training / exchange programs), lecturers or people on a short professional visit.
